About the Compiler
Robin Malan has had a long career as a teacher, educational writer and compiler. Born (1940) and brought up in Johannesburg, his university years and first teaching post were in Cape Town, where he was also a theatre director and actor, and a radio actor. He taught English and History at Cape Town High School, while running annual drama winter schools for school students. He spent eight years as artistic director of theatre-in-education companies in Cape Town and Pretoria. Then, for fifteen years, he was Head of English and Assistant Head of Waterford Kamhlaba United World College in Swaziland. He ran a specialist bookshop in Mbabane, Africasouth Books. He has taught in the Department of Drama at Stellenbosch University and tutored in the English Department at UCT, and now lives in Cape Town. He does volunteer work for Triangle Project, facilitating a support-group for young gay and bisexual men. He is the editor of English Alive, the annual anthology of writing from high schools and colleges, of which he was a co-founder in 1967. From 2005 he has been the Chairperson of IBBY SA, the South African national section of the International Board on Books for Young People.
