Njabulo S Ndebele on the origins of Fine Lines from the Box:
'A turning point in my life occurred when I discovered a treasure trove of banned books in my father’s garage, One day, alone at home and bored during school holidays in the mid-1960s, I began to explore my home. There was that was that wooden crate at the front right corner of the garage ... I still remember the thrill of reading these … books and beginning to discuss them with myself ...'
Ndebele's most outstanding feature is his intellectual and political independence, which he guards with a calm conviction that may rile loyal party supporters on both sides of the political divide.
