About the author Njabulo S Ndebele is not only one of South Africa’s finest fiction writers but also one of our most prominent academics. Vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town since July 2000, he also served (from 1993–1998) as vice-chancellor of the University of the North (now merged into the University of Limpopo) and, previously, as vice-rector of the University of the Western Cape. Earlier positions include chair of the Department of African Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand; and pro-vice-chancellor, dean, and head of the English Department at the National University of Lesotho. Professor Ndebele obtained his Masters degree in English Literature from Cambridge University, UK, and a PhD. in Philosophy, English and American Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Denver, USA. He has been awarded a number of honorary doctorates in Literature.
